Again, if you missed last week’s column (and you have to stop doing that) you might be surprised to learn, only today, that Ottawa has 10 lakes within its municipal borders. Legitimate, I’m-not-talking-ponds-or-catch-basins lakes, almost as many lakes as you would find in cottage country around the Big Rideau. I have listed them in the same order as the clues given last week.
The majority of readers who took a stab at naming the 10 lakes got them right. 1) Mud Lake is in Britannia, and is much beloved by bird watchers and naturalists in Ottawa.
I think most of the clues were rather good, although one was deliberately vague, and another was designed to trick you, so overall, an impressive showing. Within a stone’s throw of the Ottawa River, it has a beautiful winding trail that runs beside it, with large pine and a soft-needled floor that might make you think you’ve been transported to Algonquin park. 4) If people were going to miss a lake, it tended to be this one, even though the clue had a warning that only part of this lake was in Ottawa (the only lake not completely within city boundaries.) We were looking for Lac des Chats, on the Ottawa River, below the Chat’s Falls dam. 9) Didn’t think you got much of a clue on this one — Little Tudor Mansion Lake was the complete clue — but most of you got it anyway.
Don’t know if I ever want to be commuting behind him.) The most common error was throwing in Calabogie Lake. 2) Brewer Park Pond is the lake people are thinking of re-joining to the Rideau River. 5) This lake has a funny story to tell about LRT in Ottawa (honestly.) When the original north-south line was going to be built, a study was commissioned on how the line might affect fish stock along the Rideau River. We were looking for Sand Pits Lake, in Rockliffe Park.
