Updating images in a wpf application

In my previous Forms application I had a timer that updated the form 30 times per second and used the public bitmap as source for a picturebox control.

But that is an ugly way and I want to do it better.

So I have an image that when the user clicks on a button it will change it to a new item.

However, whenever the user clicks on one of the button, the window will go blank.

I would like to have it update as often af the data updates. In this code behind we have an async void method which firstly waits for 2 seconds (optional) before then creating 100 visual elements at random locations within the control.
